Word of the Week - 128

Art by Jack Vettriano.

Word of the Week:  HOLD

Storage for a ship's cargo or loving arms, words and where they can run to.  Hold on, hold out, to have and to hold, hold this for me, hold up.

Gravity holds us in place, yet recent displays of gymnastic excellence say this may not be true for everyone.  Hold a job, foothold, toehold, behold, I wanna hold your hand.  He's a holdover from the last administration.

Contain, keep, protect, ensnare, persevere, cherish.  Determined, stubborn. clinging, trapped, lawless, powerless.  What is this strange hold you have over me?  Hypnotic, possessive, bewitching, fated.  Hold my place in line, hold me in your thoughts.  Reserve, guarantee, promise.

Don't put me on hold.  Disregard, dismiss, ignore.

We hold these truths to be self-evident.

Found your blog from a comment you made on Elizabeth's site, and I will be back. I love your word ponderings.

"hold" immediately reminds me of Peter Gabriel's Wallflower: http://www.metrolyrics.com/wallflower-live-on-letterman-peter-gabriel-ml-video-jcg.html

Your comment from Elizabeth's blog was about time travel, and how your neural pathways having been "detoured". I've been having big nostalgic time travel moments lately. The other morning as I emerged from my car into a workplace parking garage smelling of asphalt, I was suddenly transported back to my grandmother's driveway in 1975. It was a delicisous feeling to inhabit two decades simultaneously...

Rebeccalyr - Hello and thank you for visiting, for commenting. Thank you, generally. The wonderful way songs tell parts of our story, convey succinctly our often wandering thoughts. I appreciate the link and did not know this song. Time travel is one of my favorite things, not a notion but a thing that is somehow real. Scent is possibly the most powerful catalyst. If, as the physicists say, all time exists simultaneously, of course we can have our feet in two worlds, decades apart. A particularly glorious feeling, that of what we so loved not being lost. Happy to meet you. xo
