Gorey is/was a wonderful artist, illustrator, writer. Thanks for this, Marylinn. Happy birthday, Edward Gorey. And how about that coat?

did i tell you about the production of Dracula i saw in NYC a gazillion years ago, in which he did the set & costume design? everything was black and white, with the exception of drops o blood and a single red rose.

Gorey had an incredibly sinister but hillarious attitude towards life...and what a befitting name! I used to love the intro to that show...comforting in a strange way. I guess it was one of those 'constants' in life on Sunday evenings.
Elisabeth - Hello :) And that was a signature wardrobe item for him, the ankle-length fur, even though, as they say, he was very fond of animals. I find him a grand model for being exactly who one is - in life, in art. xo
Susan - I did not know you'd seen his Dracula. We are nearly ill with envy. I have this overview of your New York years as being spent doing and seeing all the very best the city and the times had to offer. And yes, isn't he something? There is a You Tube interview with him talking about an awful movie called, I think, SUTURE. His wonder at its awfulness. xo
Kerry - Ratty! Mole! How happy I am when they arrive with you. The Mystery! animation, with its little screams, damsels with the vapors. I become re-infatuated with him about every 3 days. And the lovely symmetry of actually being named Gorey. xo
I spotted some great images of him with is cats a while back...
Good to have these people in the world..
I never realized he shared a birthday with George Washington. That PBS Mystery intro is so classic, I love it.

Denise - He was very fond of cats and drew them - in his unique style - as creatures of mirth and generosity. Where or who would we be without the Edward Goreys? xo
Erin - I just became aware of his birthday last week. And Mystery!, the intro, the episodes, what a treat, but that holds true for just about anything PBS. xo
O I love him. A twisted terrible humor. I wonder what we DIDN'T see...
Beth - While not a seeker of publicity, what I've read of Gorey and his life don't suggest too much that was hidden from our view. But with such a mind, one does wonder. xo
I missed it this year. Honestly my brains are so frazzled lately I seem to be going around in spirals.
Thanks for this reminder of the one and only Gorey. I hope wherever he is, there are cats. :)
Yvette - I think many of us are going around in spirals, or just marking time in place - or treading water. Don't you know there are cats, every manner of cat, and everything else he loved. How fortunate we are to have him among our inspirations. xo
