Happy Birthday, John Cleese, and others

Cleese image thanks to fersht.typepad.com

The day a first child, any child, only child, is born remains a day of increase, of expansion and joy. Today is my son's birthday, a date he shares with, among others, Monty Python's John Cleese and, as he is called, Wales' greatest poet, Dylan Thomas.

Today I celebrate his humor, a sharp skill at mimicry, a mostly philosophical nature that helps carry us both through trying times. I celebrate his resilience, his capacity for appreciating the good that comes his way. He seems to lack any malice or the harboring of resentment, and is his parents' child in that he would probably rather be reading or seeing a movie than anything, except maybe having court-side seats for the Lakers.

Without him I would be less than I am in every sense. I wish him peace of mind, vibrant health, abundance in all he desires and the continuing determination to see his creative dreams come true. We chose his name for we knew he would bring light. May it keep growing brighter.

Happy Birthday to your wonderful son. What a treat to share one's natal day with 2 such supremely talented Britishers - albeit in very different ways.

Erin - Thank you. Restraint was the word in my mind for I sat here typing, weeping and thinking of more and more to say. Yes, fine birthday fellows and what he shares with each.

I hope someone gives him a lovely "Norwegian Blue" for his birthday... a live one, hopefully.

Rebecca - Knew I forgot someone. Apologies to Sylvia. Thank you for the wishes, on behalf of all.

Robert - The unneeded, unwelcome gift, an ex-parrot. We will watch for signs of life. Thank you, and for the chuckle.

Artist and Geek - Thank you. I think he came here with knowledge it has taken me years to accumulate. I will share your good wishes.

Pamela - Thank you so much. I am grateful that the inspiration came to me to write it. It was a fine day, a box of homemade red velvet cupcakes from a friend who, as he said, could easily trade journalism for professional baking.

Happy Birthday to your much loved son, Marylinn - I love how you chose his name for the light in it, the sure knowledge he would bring light in with him.

What I hear here is your gratitude for the bond you have with him, a celebration of his birthday, yes - and, too, of your relationship with him.

Blessings on you both.

Denise - He is a fine fellow, lucky for me. Thank you so much for your good wishes, which have been passed along. Glad to see it made your day. It made mine.

Laoch - Thank you very much for your note, for your wishes, which have been shared. Yes, I thought Dylan Thomas was suitable company for an expanding writer (and Cleese is not chopped liver in the writing dept., either).

Claire - It is very much a celebration of all you mentioned and I am so happy that, after blogging since 2008, it occurred to me to speak of it here. As his father and I sat in the ER waiting room while they got him sedated, etc., for the ICU nearly 4 years ago, I said that he would get better, the world needs his light. I know I do. Thank you for your blessing, which we happily share.

Lisa - It was a quick meeting but at least it got to happen. Typical So. Cal...talking while zipping along the freeway but, as I knew you would, you got it. And with you helping lead the charge when so many prayers were neded...we are here. Thank you for your words...I am a grateful mom and have shared your wishes.
