HOMELAND unofficial Fan Club: Sign up here

Mandy Patinkin, Claire Danes and Damien Lewis of Showtime's HOMELAND
Okay, HOMELAND.  We watched the two-part finale of season one last night.  I've been dreaming HOMELAND.  Just now I saw a promo for the second season which begins on Sept. 30, with this as the background music.  Well.

We who do not see the better shows on their original channels arrive at the party a little late.  Still, late is just fine.  It was a week that began with the season finale of BREAKING BAD,  concluded with HOMELAND and housed numerous DR. WHO episodes from season six, one of which contained my favorite scripted quote in a long time.

"You have a time machine.  I have a gun.  What the hell, let's kill Hitler."

There are moments when I wonder at an involvement with fictional characters that is Pavlovian, salivating and everything.  Then I listen to how much more truth there is in the words they are given to say by people who can write and who do not go all Uriah Heep when the truth is required.  David Simon - creator of THE WIRE, TREME and GENERATION KILL  - was a guest on Craig Ferguson's show Thursday night and mentioned the tiny audience he feels is attracted to his series.  I say not so.  Many of us miss them first-run in our cable-free existence but become zealots as they are made more available.  The fan base for intelligent television is not small, it may just be a bit behind the overnight ratings.  Which reminds me, BBC's THE HOUR will reappear this fall.  See what you can learn from Vogue magazine's September issue?  But it will be spring, I understand,  before Mr. Cumberbatch returns as Sherlock Holmes.  Based on my relationship with time, that could feel like a week from Tuesday.  Meanwhile, we will prowl until we find new-to-us treasures with which to become obsessed.  Can't wait.

Denise - Worth looking into. I know my brother in WA has seen it, but his son in Shanghai may have sent it. We also like a show called JUSTIFIED...a US marshal sent back to work in his home territory, Kentucky's coal mining (now meth cooking) country. A few seasons of it exist and there will be more. I like series tv for the on-going characters, a story that unfolds over time but I once worked in tv and I'm just too old to do it differently. xo

I'm in. We watched the entire series in about a week while it was still on Demand on Comcast. We can't wait for the next installment. What a great show.

I also just finished both seasons of Downton Abbey, the best PBS series I've ever watched.

The hardest part is getting to that last episode and having to wait impatiently for more.

Mel - Hi. Isn't it great? We tried to stretch it out, not wanting it to be over but became gluttons toward the end, watched on my son's game console. There are some, in my opinion, wonderful older PBS shows which a DOWNTON ABBEY fan would enjoy that may or may not be available, among them THE JEWEL IN THE CROWN, A TOWN LIKE ALICE, POLDARK, the original UPSTAIRS, DOWNSTAIRS, a mini series of Dickens' BLEAK HOUSE, BRIDESHEAD REVISITED and many others that I've still not seen. It is so hard waiting nearly a year for a new season, like BREAKING BAD. Well, I've managed to carry on, haven't I. xo

Thank you so much for the PBS recommendations. I adored Upstairs, Downstairs, which I was obsessed with when it originally aired but barely remember now. Time to revist.

I'm wishing I had reread Dandelion Wine before starting Farewell Summer, as the characters are a bit fuzzy. But since it's Ray Bradbury, and I love the way he writes, I don't have the patience to wait.

Mel - Doing things back-to-front is always an option. Like eating dessert first. xo

And now with Netflix we can be obsessed in episode-after-episode-long throngs! Beverage: check; snack: check; A Sunday to spend on your couch: check.

Rachel - Hello. We just last night finished Season 5 of DR. WHO, all thanks to Netflix. What a treat. I think of my mom, who has been gone for 18 years, and how the VCR might have been invented just for her. A great movie fan. When she babysat, she and my son watched old Cary Grant movies. I love the way lost favorites have new life through technology. xo

WHen I was younger, I was obsessed with Judy Garland movies - all on VHS - I would sing all the songs in the backyard like her life in those films were mine.

Rachel - She had such great songs - "Over the Rainbow" and I love "Meet Me In St. Louis." I watched Judy Garland with my mom, the Andy Hardy movies with Mickey Rooney - "Hey, kids, let's put on a show." xo
